Résumé :

En 1998, le compostage des déchets urbains se développe sans que les effets d’apports répétés des composts sur les agrosystèmes soient tous connus. L’INRA et Veolia mettent en place l’essai au champ QualiAgro où des composts urbains sont comparés à un fumier de bovins de référence. Après 20 ans, leur efficacité à augmenter les stocks de matière organique des sols est démontrée ainsi que l’amélioration des propriétés des sols associées ; cette pratique permet d’éviter le recours aux engrais de synthèse (en totalité pour le phosphore et le potassium, partiellement pour l’azote). Les impacts environnementaux associés aux éléments traces, aux contaminants organiques dont des pharmaceutiques ou aux pathogènes ou gènes de résistance aux antibiotiques sont limités permettant d’assurer que le retour au sol des déchets organiques constitue une voie intéressante de valorisation aux impacts très limités à moyen terme.
